kacdurak.com counts the stops between two stations on Istanbul's metro, Marmaray, Metrobus, trams, ferries, funiculars and cable cars, and does the same for the rail systems of a few other Turkish cities. "Kaç durak" is Turkish for "how many stops". We're independent and have no link to Metro İstanbul, İETT, Şehir Hatları or any municipality.
How we count stops
The stop you board at doesn't count; the one you get off at does. Someone who boards the M2 at Yenikapı and gets off at Taksim passes Vezneciler, Haliç and Şişhane and gets off at the fourth stop. On the site that route shows as "4 stops".
When a journey has changes, we count the stops on each leg and add them up. The station where you change is counted once.
Where the times come from
Metro İstanbul publishes an end-to-end journey time for each line; for the M2 it's 32 minutes. We split that time by the distance between stations, which gives the time between any two of them. Where no such figure is published (Marmaray, the M11 and the Metrobus) we estimate from distance, and the page says it's an estimate.
For a change between lines we add four minutes on average. At big interchanges like Yenikapı it can take longer.
How a route is chosen
We look for the quickest route but treat every change as a six-minute penalty, so a route that is two minutes faster with two extra changes loses to a single-line trip. If both stations are on the same line, the page leads with the stop count on that line and mentions any faster option below it.
Which cities and lines are covered?
In Istanbul: every metro line, Marmaray, the M11, the Metrobus, the trams, funiculars and cable cars, and 20 Şehir Hatları ferry lines, plus stop lists for 761 İETT bus lines. In Izmir: the metro, three tram lines and İZBAN. In Kocaeli: the Akçaray tram and the Kartepe cable car. In Konya: the tram lines. In Gaziantep: the trams and Gaziray.
If the two stops you search for are on the same line, the page gives the stop count on that line and which direction to take. If they aren't, it walks you through the quickest route with changes. Every route page lists the stops in between, the transfer points on the way and the line's first and last services.
How often is the data updated?
Line and station lists are pulled again from the open data portals with a script we run by hand. When a new station opens or a line is extended, it's added on the day it appears in the official data. Metro İstanbul's breakdown and closure notices appear at the top of pages with a delay of about five minutes.
Spotted a mistake?
Station names, new openings and line changes sometimes reach the street before they reach the open data. If you see a wrong stop count or a missing station, write to us from the contact page and we'll fix the page.
